If you are looking for a new LCD TV to keep in a room with limited available space, you might be better off with a more modest screen size. You won't want the 55-inch screen unless you have at least six feet of empty space between your eyes and the screen. Anything short of this is likely to strain your eyes.
This LCD TV features an unusual design. Where most TVs have a glossy black frame designed for discretion and simplicity, the Sony KDL-55EX500 employs a showier strategy: The black border around the top and the two sides looks conventional, but the grey strip across the bottom definitely attracts attention. We think it looks distinctive, but it might be distracting to some. It is up to you to decide if it attracts positive or negative attention. The display is also 4 inches deep, which is one of the thickest of all the LCD TVs we reviewed. Nevertheless, it is still certainly thin enough to hang discreetly on your wall or on a swivel stand. If you are interested in a thinner LCD TV, there are options on the market that are as much as an inch thinner.
