Sharp LC42D69U 42-inch 1080p LCD HDTV, Black. The Sharp Corporation has come a long way since their first product hit the Japanese market in 1915. The Ever-Sharp mechanical pencil was such a success that an abbreviated version of the name stuck with the corporation from that point onward. Since then, Sharp has developed snapping belt buckles, adjustable flow faucets, radios and naturally, televisions. That brings us to the Sharp LC42D69U, their flagship LCD TV. (For the purposes of this review, we selected Sharp's largest LCD TV without an LED backlighting system. LCD TVs with LED lighting have higher contrast but also run significantly more expensive.) This TV looks decent and allows for basic picture adjustment, but there aren't any standout features to differentiate it from competitors. Highlights include low wattage consumption, low weight and a relatively thin screen.

In terms of appearance, Sharp LC42D69U looks run-of-the-mill. It has the standard black frame with a matte screen on a stand. The picture quality is acceptable, but the technical specs are not especially impressive. If you are looking for a LCD TV with the best numbers, this unit doesn't really stand out. There is an ongoing debate in the world of consumer electronics about how much the numbers really matter, however. This television is a good choice if economy is your first priority.

The main drawback to this LCD TV is the smaller screen; unfortunately, this model is not readily available in sizes over 42 inches. Most competing manufacturers provide 46 and 55-inch models. A 42-inch screen is still big, but it is distinctly less commanding than the 55-inch televisions we reviewed. It's a nice television, but it doesn't have the stage presence of its larger brethren. The smaller screen comes with benefits, however; this LCD TV only weighs 38.4 pounds, which is 25-30% smaller than some of the other TVs we reviewed. The lower weight will make it easier to wall mount, which can be a stressful step for some people. If you choose not to mount it on the wall, the lower weight will make it less of a hazard on the stand.
