How many times ina week do you eat outside? Most people would vote for more than 3 times a week, and with the growth of chain restaurants available to satisfy your food cravings, it becomes hard, and a bit challenging to find local eateries that still keep up to their promise of providing fresh and unique recipes that you won't find at a chain restaurant. I recently came across this infographic from YellowPages.com which shows the Top 20 Local Restaurants in different states, and while I was sad that San Francisco came at #20, it was no surprise that New York topped the chart. Take a look to see if your city has made the cut, and also discover the Best Local restaurant in your state.
Do you see any benefit of eating local?? and what are some of your favorite eateries out there which deserve a shout-out? Share with us so others in your city can also discover some fresh food that's locally grown and made!
After living in Dallas for around 2 years, you get to know the good and bad about restaurants pretty soon, because unlike the Bay Area, there aren't too many good choices out there. So if you are in or around the area, and are craving for Mexican food, then check out Mattitos, a fun and friendly Mexican restaurant Dallas that will satiate your cravings for authentic Tex-Mex food. Like any other food lover, I turned to Yelp to look for better-than-average Mexican restaurants in Dallas, and Mattitos indeed had some rave reviews. As we visited their Uptown Dallas location, we found that their decor is warm and colorful, just how you'd expect a Mexican restaurant to be, and you'll be greeted by nice and friendly staff who will answer your queries without rush. The food is totally another story. Their Menu is large and extensive, especially their Lunch specials. They have a large variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options; no wonder they are a favorite party caterer Dallas. And don't forget to order something from their Drinks Menu - their award-winning Cocktails are out-of-this world, and your visit would be incomplete without trying one of them.
Their Sunday Brunch menu is another good choice, from appetizers to main course as well as a dessert, you'll get to taste everything, so it is perfect for family brunches. Mattitos also provides affordable and cheap banquet halls, so check them out if you are planning an event around the area.
With good food, lots of options, affordable prices, and a family-friendly environment, there are a lot of things that work in favor of this authentic Tex-Mex eating harbor. We enjoyed our visit, and I am sure you will too - after all Yelpers can be trusted for their reviews most of the time!

On a recent business trip to New York, I was craving for some delicious indian food, and I have to say I was happy when a colleague recommended Tadka Indian restaurant in Manhattan, for a memorable lunch! Its hard to find nice and reliably good food for reasonable prices in a Manhattan/Midtown, and Tadka turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It is indeed a very tiny and cramped place in a busy location, but if you are seeking fast service, better-than-average food, and affordable lunch alternative, then Tadka will not disappoint you. In fact, a lot of my American colleagues seemed to like it too, and I was also told that this serves to be a very popular restaurant for take-out and delivery! With so many people vouching for it, I think you can safely give Tadka Indian restaurant a fair chance on your next trip to Manhattan, right?! Tadka restaurant in New York the newest addition to the critically acclaimed Indian eateries by Shiva Natarajan, the chef & owner of the already famous Chola, Bombay, Malabar Hill and Jaipore Royal Cuisine in the Tri-State areas. Combining traditional Indian decor with a New York look, this is a small yet cozy place that features dark wooden floors and tables, light flowering hanging lanterns, comfortable chairs, walls decorated with small statues hidden amidst strategically mounted frames and a large front window that makes the dining area a bit more spacious. The limited space is not so much of a concern, considering the other similar restaurants on the same street! The overall feeling is comfortable and inviting.
They feature an extensive menu, with a special one for Vegetarians like me. we ordered the Tawa Paneer and the kalmi Kababs for appetizers, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed these. There are a lot of exquisite entrees for the main course. The prices are pretty reasonable, and the portions are substantial too. The Navratan Korma, Shahi Paneer, Lamb Vindaloo and the Bhuna Gosht were particularly good. Loads of choices for the Breads and Parathas too; the only disappointment was the dessert. With only Gulab Jamuns, Halwa or Kheer to choose from, the sweet-loving critic in me was not too satisfied - but the Gulab Jamuns we ordered were soft and nice, so it was good.
The service was fast and efficient, and the waiting staff was courteous and educated about the menu options. The price ranges from $3.50 to $17.95, which is quite reasonable for a comparable fine-dining experience. Having said that, we all enjoyed the food, and though it was not "exquisite", it was worth the value, and without any grievances. The only drawback would be the tiny place, and the lack of parking. It's an ideal location for weekday lunches if you work around the area; better yet, order a take-out as they provide free delivery upto a certain radius!
Tadka is not a place you'd choose for a romantic dinner or a boisterous family gathering. But if what you seek is reasonably-priced good food with fast service, Tadka Indian Cuisine should be on your to-go list.
Wolfgang Puck is a name not unknown to anyone. Spago Hollywood on Sunset, originally known as Bistro Garden and a favourite with all hollywood celebrities, has been re-surrected as Spago Beverly Hills, the latest venture by chef Puck, and remains to be a cherished dining destination for the people of Los Angeles. With its beautiful ambience, shaded patio with tall trees and the inviting open-kitchen architecture, Puck and his wife have truly created an upscale restaurant in the already star-studded Beverly Hills. Standing the tests of time and taste since 1997, Spago is undoubtedly one of the best in terms of cuisine, standards and style! Romantic yet affable at the same time, and featuring the creativity of celebrity chefs, there's no way you can go wrong with Spago! The interior is aesthetically done and carries the sophisticated, elegant and warm touch that is a bit uncharacteristic of designer Barbara Lazaroff. At the center of the sophisticated restaurant is the old Bistro Garden's romantic patio, beautifully designed and shaded by tall pepper trees. It offers a relaxing outside venue for a lunch. A fountain inscribed with the word "passion" (in various languages) stands next to a pair of 100-year-old olive trees imported just for Spago. But the highlight has to be the spectacular kitchen, which can be viewed through a giant wall of colorful, etched glass. The dining room is striking, with colorful tiles, vibrant stained-glass windows and wildly colorful carpets. Spago is a place where you can expect to be given the red-carpet treatment; it does not matter that you are a "somebody" sharing the space with the hollywood stars! Original artwork and jeweled details surround the dining room and add to the beauty of the restaurant, which also offers two private dining rooms with a separate bar for receptions and functions.
As Wolfgang Puck's flagship restaurant, Spago remains at the forefront of L.A's dining style. Executive chef Lee Hefter's menu features such signature dishes as the deservedly famous salmon and creme fraiche pizza. Using the finest ingredients and his artistic flair, Hefter creates culinary masterpieces. It's difficult to list the best dishes, but we had the Risotto with oregon Porcini Mushrooms and the famous Sweet White Corn and Mascarpone Agnolotti, followed by the Giant Farmer's Cheese Ravioli, and I have to tell you everything about the dishes, from taste to texture to presentation, was simply fabulous! They have several daily specials with cheese and seasonal produce, and the salmon dishes, variety of salads, pasta and noodles, everything is a classic. Actually, I was surprised to find so many choices on the Menu- there's something for everyone to enjoy! But the nightlight, and also the primary reason we visited Spago, was the classic desserts by Pastry Chef Sherry Yard. I own her cookbook and marvel at her creations, and though the luscious Tiramisu and the buttery Apple Streudel was all we could eat, you'd want to sample every entry on the menu!!
They also have an extensive wine list to suit the rest of the menu. You can easily expect a tab of $70-100 for a couple, but that's pretty competent with other upscale restaurants like Tantra Indian Restaurant and La Fondue, and definitely worth the quality of food and service. You are sure to enjoy your time at Spago, with the added bonus of sighting your favorite hollywood celebrities, and you'll leave feeling culinarily blessed! If you are looking for an upscale romantic and memorable lunch or dinner destination, Spago at Beverly Hills will not disappoint you!

Anyone who has eaten Indian food knows that it is characterized by the rich spectrum of spices in which it is cooked, giving the food its inimitable flavor and aroma. These spices are known as "Masala", which is nothing but an intricate combination of different spices used to flavor the food. But Masala Indian Fusion restaurant takes the traditional indian food one step further by pairing the indian culinary techniques with western ingredients to make it more appealable to an international audience, and I must say they do a great job of it! Located in Danville, more like the San Ramon area of East Bay in california, Masala Fusion is an upscale restaurant sure to serve you a memorable dinner. Masala Fusion is located in the danville downtown area on San Ramon Valley blvd, and has the look of a typical downtown eatery. Quaint and artistically decorated in warm colors with white tablecloths, it is not very overly-done, and has its warmth and appeal. The highlight is definitely the open kitchen area where you can see the chef Rajesh Khanna in action, who by the way, is also the owner. His wife Anu is a gracious hostess, ever-smiling and exuding warmth, which makes you feel quite at ease and relaxed. The low-lighting, small wooden partitions and plants create nice individual spaces, both comfortable and inviting. During day-time, the open glass windows give a nice view of the downtown while you enjoy your food.
The food is definitely the best I have eaten in a long time, and I'd put it in league with my other favourites Shiva's restaurant in mountain view and Amber restaurant in santana row. There is an extensive Wine List to choose from, and a nice menu with loads of vegetarian and non-veg options. All the dishes we ordered were just perfect, and the entrees are served with saffron rice. From tender lamb to grilled mahi-mahi, pepper chicken to mussels, calamari or scallops, the non-veg options are plenty. But the vegetarians have loads to enjoy too! The pan-fried baby eggplant and grilled portobello mushrooms were great as appetizers, and their tomato-coconut bisque(soup) is the closest to indian tomato soup I've had anywhere in the bay area! We were really impressed by their gravies, which had some unique blends like pine-nuts and saffron, carmelized onion and grape, or the cashew and chilly sauce! And their Vegetable Biryani was simply superb; perfectly cooked and spiced. They also have several tandoori classics and breads to choose from. But please notify them about your spice level as some of their dishes can get really hot! But don't worry, a mango creme brulee or a pista-ssaffron kulfi will soothe your tongue and your senses.
Desserts at Masala Fusion deserve a praise of their own. Even with just 4 choices, their Creme Brulee and Indian kulfi is a classic end to a perfect dinner! Their very-well-priced lunch buffets are a delectable option for under $10. They are closed on Mondays, but if spices and indian cooking interests you, they offer Cooking Class & Food Tasting every Monday evenings from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the restaurant for $6. We've already been there two times and I have nothing but good reviews to share about Masala Indian Fusion. You really have to try this restaurant for a unique take on indian food. A warm ambience, commendable food, friendly staff and a unique blend of flavors will lure you to visit them again. If you don't believe me, try it for yourself and see!

When it comes to an upscale area full of shopping and good food, Santana Row in san jose steals the show. This small street is lined with beautiful shops on both sides and quaint yet inviting restaurants that can fulfill any culinary urge! Decked among these is the only independently-owned Village Bistro and Bar that offers the finest and freshest local ingredients in a culturally diverse menu that reflects the personality of our region. If you are looking for a fresh take on taste and presentation on californian cuisine, Village California Bistro is a place you should not miss. With a great location, admirable food and the most eclectic wine list in the South Bay, this place will make you feel right at home! Located right in the middle of Santana Row, The Village California Bistro is walking distance to numerous hot spots on the street. We went there for an early dinner with a reservation, which was good, as it does get crowded at times. The place is small and quaint, and though the ambience was relaxing, I think the lighting was too dim; just a little more bright would only have made it more appealing. They are open for Lunch and Dinner and offer a special Brunch Menu on weekends, which looked pretty interesting. They have a bar seating on the right side, and a wonderful outside and shaded side-patio seating which is perfect for sunny days! The decor of the place was soothing, and each table has a neatly folded square piece of paper which is actually the Menu- pretty cool and different, I liked the style!
True to its California Bistro theme, the menu has several options with regional favorites combined with classic and some fusion elements. It has a wide choice for both vegetarians and the meat-lovers alike. The portions are small, especially if you are comparing them to generous servings in indian or italian restaurants, so be prepared to order an entree per person, unless you have a really small appetite. But the dishes are reasonably-priced, comparing with the other places in Santana Row. We had the Housemade Tortellini and Spring Garlic Soup which were just fabulous; we ordered the Spinach-Mushroom Lasagna and the Grilled Asparagus Spears, while our friends had the Linguine Clamps and the Oven-roasted Salmon- all food was cooked fresh and was aromatically spiced with herbs and sauces. They have variations in the menu for weekend brunches, so we are definitely trying those next time.
The wine selection is huge, and if its California wine (from the wine country itself), you know you can't go wrong! The desserts were good, we could barely share the Sunken Hazelnut Belgian Chocolate Brownie which was awesome! They do charge $2.00 extra for split/sharing orders (kind of strange, huh!), but that's printed on the menu in fine print, so don't be shocked! So far so good, and now a look at a few things that I'd like to be changed. The staff is coureous, but the service is slow, and the food takes a really long time to come! I'd like to think its because they make everything fresh, and it gives us time to enjoy and converse, but a little faster service would get it more followers. And I don't think its a place young kids would enjoy. Maybe the patio for brunches, yes, but the restaurant is more suited to private, romantic dinners rather than a group of boisterous people.
Overall, we did like the food at Villge Bistro, and though we may not visit it as often as Amber Indian Restaurant, its definitely a nice place to enjoy authentic and fresh californian food around the Santana Row area.
Los Angeles, the city of the Hollywood stars, with all the glimmer and glitter, has several inviting areas that attract huge crowds every night, Silverlake downtown being one of them. Sunset Boulevard is definitely one of the most picturesque and upscale streets in Los Angeles, housing quite a few famous restaurants and night-clubs, one such gem being the Tantra Indian Restaurant. One visit is enough to prove that the owner Navraj Singh has spared no expense in creating this masterpiece of a restaurant cum nightclub. Tantra is one of L.A.'s current "in" destinations, both for its ambience and the fine cuisine. We were so mesmerized with our visit I wish I could drive to LA every weekend to dine here! As you enter through the massive copper doors, you will find yourself surrounded by a decor that takes its cues from the spices of Indian cooking. Rich saffron-colored walls invite you to lose yourself in the sensory experience that awaits, as iron-and-silk light fixtures, curtains of oxidized metals, murals of gender-fused beings, and black-and-white Bollywood movies shown on a giant plasma screen lend an unorthodox feel to the place. A beautiful portrait of an Indian mythological figure hangs above the hostess station, welcoming you with a huge smile. To the right is a cocktail lounge, with long banquets covered in gorgeous sari material, and a beautiful bar that serves specialty drinks such as Tears of Ganesha, Tiger’s Milk and Shiva's Revenge as the DJ keeps the hip mood alive. To the left is the dining area, and to reach this you have to cross a narrow pool strewn with orchid blossoms and floating candles!! Yes, an actual indoor pool, which jus makes the atmosphere even more mysterious and romantic!
Moving onto food, I think the chef Sanjay Kumar has created a truly eclectic fusion menu that has its roots in indian cooking yet offers a contemporary dining experience. The entrees range from $11 to $16, and span across a range of typical and atypical flavors; from chicken to catfish, lamb to salmon and shrimp, and bhindi and eggplant to potatoes and paneer, there's something to appease everyone in the group. All the food is very delicately spiced, with one particular flavor dominating the dish; the chef offers some unique pairings like cardamom with homey mustard and dill, or coconut with cumin, ajwain and mint to name a few. The rich and creamy curries have the aroma of freshly-ground spices, and taste great with the choice of breads and naan. They also have a nice drinks menu to compliment your meal. The dessert offers decent choices; we really liked the Chocolate Crepes and the Tandoori Ananas (grilled pineapples)
The waiting staff is knowledgeable and professional, courteous and efficient. The owner himself is always present to preside over the dining experience. Due to its location and popularity, its advisable to make reservations in advance. The place offers valet parking as well as catering services and banquet facilities. Overall, Tantra offers a wonderful value for your money. It's trendy and stylish, yet brings you in touch with indian decor, and if you are lucky, you may even spot a celebrity enjoying themselves on Sunset Blvd!! Tantra Indian restaurant is definitely on my highly-recommended restaurants in Los Angeles list. Try it and see for yourself!
Update: Chef Sanjay is no longer with Tantra, and the management seems to have changed too; the food is not as great as it used to be, but is still decent to label Tantra as a nice restaurant to try in the vicinity!

Living in the Bay Area definitely has its perks, especially in terms of choices in food! We have never been more satisfied by restaurants than here, and for foodies like us, that means a lot! So last weekend, we decided to explore the Palo Alto downtown on foot. It's a quaint little downtown close to the upscale residential area of Palo Alto. There are several restaurants to choose from, but an American friend at work had recommended an Indian place called Darbar Restaurant, and we decided to check it out. It was totally worth the trip, because the fresh and homemade-style food, with no additional garnishes required, was so good that it spoke for itself! Darbar is not a very upscale restaurant; in fact, the first look from outside may put you in second thoughts about the place! But open the door and you'll see a vibrant indian restaurant, a huge bronze statue welcoming you at the entrance. The decor is fitting with warm tones of light yellow and orange. The place is really small though, and they have a setting for the buffet table at the end of the room, making the dining area even smaller. I wouldn't rate it high on the ambience, but then the food will make it worth your while!
Darbar serves both North and South Indian cuisine, and has lunch buffet specials from Monday to Friday in the noon, which has more than 20 items on the table. It's affordable, and definitely a great lunch place for people working around the area. The Dinner Menu is like any other restaurant, with lots of choices for appetizers, tandoori dishes, vindaloo, vegetarian entrees, meat, seafood and desserts. While you wait for your food, they serve you a complimentary plate of potato fritters. The gravies and curries are very tasty and flavorful; not the typical curries with an overload of cream and a few spices. While we enjoyed the Paneer Do Pyaza and the Malai Kofta, our friends relished the Chicken Vindaloo, Lamb Kurma and Tandoori Pomfret. Everything was cooked to perfection, and the balance of spices and flavors with the sauce or veggies was really commendable. Another highlight was the Biryani, which I must say was very delicately flavored with spices and saffron. It's not easy to make a good biryani, but the chef at Darbar seems to know the trick!
We were surprised to see a lot of americans dining at this restaurant, and they all seemed to be really enjoying the food! On the down side though, they don't have a sufficient wait staff, and hence you might have to wait long before you get to enjoy your dinner! Being small, it easily gets cramped, so either go in early to beat the crowd or make reservations ahead. If you are looking for a fun place for a large and boisterous group, Darbar may not be the ideal choice; it's more like a highly affordable family restaurant to enjoy good indian cuisine. And after dinner, you can walk down to one of the gelato cafes in the area for a perfect dessert! On the whole, I'd say Darbar Indian Restaurant is a place I'd definitely visit again for their food.
Continuing its winning streak, Gary Danko again secures a place in the Zagat Guide charts as the most popular restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is indeed quite a feat for a restaurant on the high end of the cost spectrum. This quaint restaurant located on Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco downtown serves Californian and French Cuisine, and attracts not only locals, but foodies from around the world! Plantation shutters, dark wood and warm earth tones create a soothing setting for his seasonal fare. Impeccably dressed waiting staff adds an air of elegance, along with an excellent wine list and cheese service. The fixed-price menu definitely ranges on the higher end, yet the award-winning food draws huge crowds every single day. James Beard Award-winning chef Gary Danko presides is the heart and soul of this restaurant. Reflecting the white-glove formality of fine dining, Danko offers impeccable cuisine and perfectly orchestrated service in an untraditionally spacious environment. The two adjoining rooms are elegant without being stiff, and the banquette seating provides both luxury and comfort. Taupe-toned walls are the perfect backdrops for museum-quality modern paintings from artists Hunt Slonem, Erin Parish, and Angelina Nasso. The wooden panels and shutters combined with well-spaced tables create an intimate yet open environment. Even their bathrooms are spa-style!!:)
The food at Gary Danko centers on lively, seasonal dishes prepared with classical french techniques. The 3-5 course seasonal menu is freestyle, and offers several seasonal ingredients paired with meats and veggies. You definitely have to try their trademark buttery-smooth glazed oysters with lettuce cream, salsify, and Osetra caviar; seared foie gras, which may be accompanied by peaches, caramelized onions, and verjus (a classic French sauce); horseradish-crusted salmon medallions with dilled cucumbers; and adventurous Moroccan spiced squab with chermoula (a Moroccan sauce made with cilantro) and orange-cumin carrots are other attention grabbers. For strict vegetarians, salads might be your only option, but the chef was kind enough to accomodate our special requests. The items on the menu range from $50-80, so be prepared to lighten your pockets!
The wine list is stellar, but expensive, and holds over 1,500 wines including an exceptional selection of grand vintages. They also boast an extensive cheese collection, and diners can take a glimpse of the spread through a handsome cheese case. For desserts, a plate of petit fours, Baked Chocolate Souffle or the Pineapple Consomme will be perfect to end a memorable meal!
On the whole, Gary Danko offers a pleasing dining experience, albeit expensive, and hence reserved for special occasions. Reservations are strongly recommended, unless you are prepared for at least half-hour wait! The quality of food and service is unparalleled, and you have to hand it to the chef for maintaining the standard as Gary Danko moves to its 8th successful year. They are also opening a new branch in the Napa Valley, so look out for more great food in the romantic city!!

Anyone who has walked down the Castro street in the quaint Mountain View downtown knows that there are several interesting restaurants and cafes here that serve delectable cuisines! This area is a food-lover's paradise, and to sustain a restaurant in this highly competitive place, you need to provide something unique to the foodie's palette. Temptations seems to be holding its ground by providing Indian-Chinese fusion food, basically, authentic indian food prepared with asian/chinese spices and curries that essentially translates hot, spicy and deliciously tantalizing! Temptations deserves a special note for its chic, colorful and asian-indian interior with bright-colored walls and soft lights. The decor focusses on two main colors: Blue and Orange colors representing Water and Fire, and signifying Hot and Cold, Yin and Yang, Sweet and Sour, Spicy and Mild tastes of dishes. The place is a bit cramped though, especially around the bar area. They have an extensive choice of wines and cocktails. The place is kid-friendly, but if you are a larger group, I'd recommend calling ahead for reservations. As a romantic alternative, you can opt to be seated on the heated patio.
The food and excellent service are the highlights though. Chicken Lollipop and Monchow Soup are great for starters, followed by main course entrees comprising of stir-frys, gravies, rice dishes and noodles. Gobi Manchurian, Szechwan Noodles, Ginger Manchurian Dry, Paneer Chilli are worth a try, and all entries are available with chicken, lamb and shrimp option. For people looking for authentic north-indian or mughlai food, they also offer the traditional cuisine that you'd find in any other restaurant. But indian-chinese food is what makes this restaurant special! The waiting staff is courteous and helpful, guiding you through the menu choices. The service is a bit slower, and I'm just affiliating that to the fact that cooking fresh food takes time:), but the food is worth the wait. Spicy and flavored with authentic spices, the taste leaves an impression far after you are done with your dinner!
The dessert doesn't offer more choices, and Rasmalai and Pista Kulfi are the best choices. As I said, the place is small, hence I wouldn't recommend it for a large party, unless you choose a non-peak time. They also have a lunch menu which can offer a welcome reprise from your daily meals and sandwiches. Overall, I'd say Temptations is an above-average experience, and if you are looking for some different kind of food in the mountain view downtown, give this a try!
When we choose a restaurant to have dinner, we are mostly craving some good food, but when this combines with an almost-perfect ambience, you surely have a winner! La Fondue in Saratoga (South San Jose) is one such gem that is sure to capture your attention. It offers a unique fondue experience, serving more than 50 different types of fondue varieties. People have called it "Magical", "Indulgent", and some have even gone as far as saying that "It is the best place to have a kiss!!" Now that speaks volumes, right?! All I can say is that words would not describe the grandeur of this restaurant. As its said, some things are best experienced than learnt! Located right in the center of Saratoga downtown, this is aptly termed as the most romantic restaurant in Northern California. The restaurant is dimly lit and the decor is very enchanting. La Fondue is an ideal place for a date, where couples get cozy in big comfortable chairs, under a ceiling that is appropriately adorned with star-and-moon motifs, and can share the decadence of chocolate. This place is extremely popular, so make sure you plan ahead and make reservations, sometimes they are booked even a month in advance! Like any other restaurant serving French or Swiss food, La Fondue is expensive, and its best to align your expectations and be prepared! but the food, the service, the atmosphere and the experience is well worth the price.
They have an extensive, almost surprisingly huge Menu, with cheese, fruit, veggies, meat and of course, chocolate! For our first-time at this place, the pristine wait-staff guided you through the fondue experience, and also led us step by step through the menu choices. You can either go for the Fondue Combinations, which are designed for 2 people, or choose from the Ala Carte Menu. We were lucky to find a wide range of vegetarian options, but they also have some specialities for the non-vegetarians, and the La Romantique combo or the Wild Thing combo (literally wild animals on this list!) are their recommended items. You are free to choose your cooking methods; we went for the Tomato-Basil bisque and the The Court Buillion. It really was an awesome experience, probably more because it was our first time! The salads are all great too, but the treat of the evening has to be The Chocolate Fondue!! With plenty of delicious flavors to choose from (Amaretto and Godiva are my favorites), this place can get you high! For the Cheese Fondue, we loved the Stinking Garlic, Bleu Tomato and the Pesto and Cognac flavors. Simply amazing!!
La Fondue in Saratoga is surely a class apart; From the rich European design to the colorful and cozy interiors, the excellent service, and the perfect food, this place is truly "Mood and Food at its Best!" And if that's not all, just add some liquor to your meal and you are all set for a luxurious, never-to-forget dining experience. The location offers ample parking, private seating, as well as a great setup for a family or friends night out. Except for a higher tab, we couldn't find anything wrong with this place, and would definitely go there again!

A restaurant that wants to hold its ground in the competitive town of San Francisco needs to be something different, and Myth seems to be just that. It features eclectic French/California cuisine served in casual yet elegant surroundings. Located in San Francisco's Historic Jackson Square area, it provides a dining experience inside a landmark building constructed more than 120 years ago, and is conveniently situated next to the Financial District, North Beach and Chinatown. The landmark space has been transformed into a contemporary yet inviting space containing several dining rooms, including a special eight-person chefs table, a bar and lounge areas. Chef Sean O'Brien puts his years of training at Gary Danko to good use, crafting a menu with an upscale pedigree but with a more casual sensibility. The restaurant can be described as homey but stylish, with a hip-elegant 60-seat interior. At the entrance diners are greet by a host stand in front of wooden shelves with a perfectly framed and lit live orchid; and you can see the seating arrangement to her right and the bar on the other end. The banquettes are covered in Japanese-style prints, and add to the color. The interior looks intimate with walnut-lattice partitions and low ceiling adorned with shimmering waves of gossamer fabric. There are also some private dining spaces for romantic evenings, and of course a central dining area in front of the open kitchen for a more action-oriented crowd.
Unlike other French restaurants, the menu here has a lot of deelectable options for vegetarians, and not just salads. The Asian Pear salad and the Peeky Crab Toe salad were great; the main course features some exotic entrees (Menu below). From the famous Salmon and Trout to the amazingly flavored Veal and Scallops, to the Rigatonni, New York Steak or the Stuffed Quali with Arugula, every dish speaks of culinary excellence. The portions are small (french-style:)) compared to the price, especially if you are used to Buffet-style dinners, so be prepared. The waiters know their stuff and are well-trained, but they are not always friendly!! Though our waiter was pretty helpful, the people on the next table seemed not to be so lucky.
The cocktail and the Wine Menu is so comprehensive, there's hardly a wine you might not find in there! The cocktails are wonderful, and desserts are sure to leave an impression long after you have left the place, Garganelli with foie gras cream and Marsala did just that! The entire menu is flavored with intriguing spices and flavors like fennel, lemongrass, cheese, pistachios and pomegranates, mushrooms and greens, and the dishes come together quite well; full points to the Chef on this!
On the whole, The Myth in San Francisco sounds similar to Gary Danko, except for the lack of quality service every time. Reservations are highly recommended, and the food is a great experience! I would definitely urge you to give this place a try.

Italian restaurants have a feel of their own, with loads of family photos adorning the walls, the wift of garlic and herbs trickling through the air while the soft romantic music plays in the backgrund! As I see it, italian restaurants are always very lively, and I love the atmosphere as much as the food. One such jewel for Italian-food lovers resides almost on the Venice beach, right in Marina Del Rey in the vibrant city of Los Angeles. C&O Trattoria, the original restaurant (just across from the Cucina) has always been a great hit with the people, but when it became too popular to cater to the growing throngs of hungry foodies, C&O Cucina came to the rescue. This place is much better and livelier than the older one, and you really have to go there to relish the tantalizing food that gells so well with the soothing ocean breeze in the air! Nestled on Washington Blvd (cross street Lincoln blvd), this fine restaurant is walking distance from the Marina, and has a sufficiently big parking lot. In the casual dining room, a festive atmosphere is fueled by age-old bottles of wine and the soft and melodious playing of "That's Amore" sing-alongs, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. The upbeat mood is enhanced by generous amounts of wine granted to every table and paid for by an honor system!! There's also an upstairs banquet room, which can accommodate 80 people, ideal for parties celebrating everything from weddings to family reunions or corporate gatherings. The dining arrangement is familiar to the traditional long family-meal settings that italians are known for. But my favorite area is by far The outfoor Patio, where you can enjoy the food along with the cherished summer sun of souther california:)
They also have a special section for Kid's menu, and for the low-carb lovers. And if for some reason you are not in the mood for italina food, they also serve you grilled sandwiches, paninis and burgers. The price is reasonable, and the staff is always smiling and attentive. This place has all the right elements, ambience, food, refreshing sun patio, ideal for family gatherings or for romantic dinners and proposals:) Except for the fact that it's located on a narrow road, I don't see any cons for C&O Cucina. It will always be one of my favorite restaurants in Los Angeles - A walk along the Venice beach followed by a lunch at C&O Cucina, or vice versa, is the perfect way to spend a lovely day!
Located in San Jose’s swanky Santana Row area, this upscale restaurant called Amber India serves traditional and contemporary Indian cuisine prepared by award winning chefs. Swathed in eclectic artwork with a refined but definite Southeast Asian bent, Amber India Restaurant is a chic dining venue, and its exotic cocktail menu gets extra points for creativity and flair while pairing perfectly with the cuisine. It represents an inviting atmosphere of modern elegance, comfort and sophistication, and provides a wonderful reprieve to the avid shoppers and night-life lovers on the street! As you enter the doors, you are drawn to the modern bold shades of blue and green on the walls, showcasing artworks that seem to convey a message. The top of the ceiling is painted deep dark blue, interspersed with yellow twinkling stars! Now if that's not dreamy, what is!!:) Its colorful yet soothing at the same time. The borders on the walls are marked with Sanskrit shlokas, and their english translations, representing Indian heritage in the western world. The dining area is more archaic, with white walls and colorful paintings. The wooden tables are covered with white linen sheets, accentuating to bring out the color of the food. Soft lighting and large space gives a feeling of warmth, and is ideal for family dinners.
The executive chef Vitthal Shetty, hails from Bangalore India, and has served in the prestigious Oberoi Hotel. He believes in presenting Indian cuisine by adhering to the authentic & traditional recipes but using local and seasonal ingredients, creating classic dishes with contemporary twists. The Cocktail Menu is definitely recommended, and showcases some really wonderful drinks. The Lunch and Dinner menu is a bit upscale, and features quite a few novelties for vegetarians and meat-lovers alike. For the first-timers, they also have some interesting samplers so you can get a feel of several dishes together. The Tandoori appetizers and some unique main-course entrees are a highlight of the Menu(link below). The spices in the food are generally mild, so if you are looking for some authentic taste, ask the waiters to make it medium-spicy. The Desserts re a class part, unseen in other restaurants, and they cater to an elite clientele, so this could also be an ideal place to take a close a business deal:)
Overall, this is a wonderful place for dinner when you are in the mood to spend a bit more for a memorable evening. The location, friendly and professional service, and the extra-ordinary management give this place at least a 4-star rating. Be warned though, they also have 2 other branches in Mountain View, California, and the restaurant there is not even half as good as the Santana Row location. They also have a Cafe in Mountain View called Amber Bites, which serves more fast-food varieties, and has some interesting dishes like Chilli-Idli Fry and Achari Paneer Tikka wraps. The paav-bhaji is also commendable. I'd say the Cafe is a good place for a quick tasty meal. Amber Indian Restaurant has been rated among the top 10 Indian resturants in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I think they deserve that, disregarding the Mountain View location. Santana Row offers a lovely experience, and I think you should definitely check it out when you get a chance.
When we think of splurging a fortune on food, lights and dazzle, we think of Las Vegas. The spectacular shows and the electrifying atmosphere that this city offers is truly amazing. But what if I tell you that now you can experience these at a place closer to you, and without spending a whole lot of fortune? That will get you interested, right! Welcome to the world of Teatro ZinZanni and prepare to be enchanted! A world where dreams and reality converge, magic and mystery are believable, and all your senses are bound to be satiated in a period of 3-4 hours!! Launched in 1998 by One Reel's Norman Lagill, Teatro ZinZanni now has 2 permanent locations, Seattle's historic Belltown District and the Waterfront location of Pier 39 off Embarcadero in the glittering city of San Francisco. Choose either of these, and you are promised an evening of adventure, sensuality, european cabaret, cirque and excitement, all under a large and gorgeous Belgian "Spiegeltent", and served with a sumptous 5-course meal. Teatro ZinZanni breaks new artistic territory with a unique and intoxicating blend of interactive theater, spectacle, fine arts and fine dining. Once you enter the tent, it looks like you are attending a family wedding. The soft mood is created by beautifully placed circular tables, adorned with simple tapestry, flowers and flickering candles. The seats are pre-assigned, but you can request to have a table closer to the center of the tent, and right next to the performers. The gourmet-style 5-course Menu(link attached below) keeps changing, but there's plenty to choose from, even for vegetarians or vegans, starting with Appetizers, Soup, Salad, an Entree, followed by the Dessert and a house-special, custom-roasted Caffee Vita! You can inform them in advance about your food allergies and they'll prepare a special meal just for you! Yes, everyone here takes an extra step to make your experience a truly memorable one. Some of the highlights include Baked Ravioli-Filled with Roasted Autumn Vegetables Cashew Basil-Pesto, Roasted Chicken Breast with Pork and Mission Fig Stuffing and desserts like Molten Valrhona Chocolate Cake.
Describing a little about the shows, it's like a bewitching evening of European Cabaret and Cirque, Divas and Madmen, Spectacle and Sensuality combined with Live Music. The Cirque is as splendid as the actual Cirque De Soleil in Las Vegas, and they have the best artists in every field, be it dance, acrobats, comedy or cabaret. We were spellbound by the theatrics, and seriously, I think I've used all the superlatives that I know of and yet nothing can capture the essence of this experience as witnessing it live! It's truly one of the best dining and theater experiences in San Francisco.
And now for the price that you pay for this experience. The general admission costs $104 per person (which includes the show and the gourmet meal), with a little more for Premium Seating and Special Holiday Performances. I think it's a small price to pay for a lifetime experience, and definitely the best way to spend a special occasion. Reservations are strongly recommended, and you can get all other details on their website. I would not recommend taking your kids with you as some of the content may not be suitable for them. Also, it is advisable to attend this on weeknights and non-holiday periods for a better value for your money! It can get really over-priced during the holidays.
Fusion between authentic cuisines has been experimented successfully since quite some time now, and has led to discovery of many retro cuisines, one such being "Indian-Chinese", chinese food prepared with Indian spices. It's a trend that began in the Western part of India and is said to be most popular with younger Indian folk. This type of food caters to a large variety of people, and ranges from mild to hot and spicy. I've always been a fan of a restaurant in Dallas which was my first exposure to this type of food in USA, and I think I can definitely say that Bombay Chinese is the only restaurant in Dallas to serve the best indian-chinese food! If you are in or around the area, be sure to try it. Located in Richardson Heights, a small food-mall area with a range of eating places, Bombay Chinese is holding its ground since a long long time. The decor of the place is simple, with standard wooden chairs and tables adorned with red tablecloths and placemats. The walls show photographs of tourist attractions in Mumbai(India), as that is where the owner as well as the chef hail from, and the soft lighting serves its purpose. The decor can feel homely for people from Bombay, but on the whole, I think the ambience needs to be more pleasant and soothing, and can benefit from a major makeover. But I think the food is what clicks with the people more, and hence this place is mostly crowded.
The menu consists mainly of chinese-style rice, noodles, meat or seafood, and vegetable stir- fry, ranging from mild and sweet flavors to garlicky, gingery, medium-spicy and hot!! If you don't have a knack for spice, be careful and clarify your inclnations to the staff beforehand, because almost everything is dark brown and bright red, and it tastes as fiery as it looks. The Chilli Paneer and the Chicken Manchurian Dry are by far the spiciest, yet truly appealing dishes. The recommended picks off the menu would be Garlic or Ginger Manchurian Dry, Schwezwan Fried rice, Chicken Manchurian gravy, and Singapori or Hongkong Noodles. The Chinese Bhel could serve to be a good appetizer. In soups, the Hot and Sour and the Monchow Soup are by far the favorites. They also have Sizzlers on their menu, and a wide range of Seafood entrees and platters. Everything is as good as it looks, and the choices for vegetarians or meat and fish lovers are immense! And the entrees are attractively priced so that most of it ranges from $7.99 to $15.00. The servings are large, and most of them can be shared by at least 2 people.
The staff is friendly and courteous, and mostly young. They try to guide you through the extensive menu to help you choose the best dish for you, and most of the times the owner himself would take extra care to make your dining experience a memorable one. The choices for beverages and alcohol are same as those served in other Indian restaurants, and ditto for the desserts, with an exception of Banana Pancake Ice Cream, which was something different.
The restaurant is mostly packed on weekends, so this is not a place for a romantic evening or a conversation over food. The lunch buffets are a good option for people working around the area, as well as party caterer Dallas. Overall, Bombay Chinese Restaurant is a place that will be favored by those who crave for ginger, garlic, chilli and spice! The taste will linger with you even after you've left the place, and most of the times you'll be tempted to come back.

New York, the city of lights, dreams, theatre and finance, basically, the city that never sleeps! So as expectations run high for everything in this city, how can food be left behind?? NY is big, and there are plenty of good places to eat, but on our trip, we just had time to check out the major tourist attractions, so our choices of location were limited. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised by the level of eateries, and believe me, being a chef myself, and coming from the food-indulgent San Francisco Bay Area, we are hard to please in terms of food. So our experience at Utsav Festive Indian restaurant, an upscale eatery in Midtown New York, was a very satisfying one, and hence needs to be shared with you. This place is located on a second-floor bridge over the plaza between 46th and 47th Streets. It's a large place aesthetically decorated in neutral and warm shades of wood, light orange and beige. The place is airy and spacious, and instantly makes you feel relaxed. On the ground floor is a bar, where snacks like spicy chicken wings, bite-size tandoori kebabs and Indian flat-bread "pizzas" are served, along with the drinks. The furniture is not too ornate, and sets off beautifully with the surrounding walls and tall glass windows. The lime green and white table-cloths help you concentrate more on your food and talk rather than keep distracting you. The lighting is soft and warm, and I was especially drawn towards the crepe fabrics that hung from the ceiling in patterns to remove the harshness of light and also create a festive mood! The Upstairs Lounge, which also serves as a private party room, is decorated with some bolder shades and carpets, again blending well with the surroundings.
And now about the Food, which happens to be the primary objective, right? Well, let me tell you that a few months back, you might not have heard good reviews about this place, and I think that's when the restaurant changed its Chef; anyways, we went there without any pre-conceived notions, just wanting some good food, and that's what we got. The Menu (link below) contains a large variety of Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian dishes and also some new wntrees on the menu that I haven't seen in other restaurants. The meat-lovers have chicken, murg, gosht, and seafood to choose from, while the veggie-lovers have the hot favourites like paneer and koftas, but also some unique dishes like Lahsuni Gobhi, Tandoori Mushroom and Khasta Kachori.
Everything was cooked fresh, and though it did take a bit longer to get our food, the staff was friendly and kept attending to us while we waited. The food, I think, was worth the wait. it smelled and looked good; the tandoori items were well marinated and cooked, whilw the gravies were rich and not too spicy. So you might want to ask them for more spice if you crave chillies! The portions were just regular, not too generous; The Kurkuri Bhindi and the Aloo Kofta Bukhara were really good. So was the Subzi Biryani and the Trivedi Daal (again, something different!) As for the desserts, I think there was nothing extraordinary about them - they met the standards.
Situated in the heart of midtown near Times Square, the prices reflect the expensive location. The entrees range from 10-15 dollars each, and even the desserts are a bit on the higher side. They do provide a Pre-Theatre Broadway Special which would work perfect for a dinner and theatre date! Overall, the food is good, but not something you can just throw your money for. Reserve this place for special occasions, or maybe lunch buffets, which are more affordable. But definitely a place worth visiting once, so you can come back and share your experiences with us!!

I realized that staying in the Bay Area, I have visited so many nice restaurants that I have neglected writing about the ones I have loved visiting in other places! You do tend to get biased for the place you live in, but then again, its also because in Bay Area I have discovered a culinary heaven like nowhere else. I know I know...some of my friends from the East Coast are going to pounce on me for this, but hey, I believe in what I see:) I spent almost 2 years in Los Angeles, CA, and there are definitely a few restaurants worth mentioning. One such quaint yet appealing place is the Ambala Dhaba, a reasonable restaurant in Westwood Santa Monica that appeals to me not only for their food, but also the ambience! Located between Santa Monica Blvd and Massachusets Avenue in West LA, this Indian restaurant has a setting of a "dhaba", or a village-like setting that makes you feel like you are sitting in a small cottage with a thatched roof. Dhaba is actually a nick-name for food joints along roads and highways in India so people can stop over for food and some rest on their long drives. This idea might not be so attractive to non-Indians who have never been to a place like this before, but trust me, it's cozy and comfortable. The entire place is decorated in a rustic fashion, with ancient Indian props, and delicate lighting is provided using standard lamps which are covered with dry-grass-like material to give it an old-world look, yet lively, unintruding and pleasant at the same time. The walls have large paintings of Indian village life on one side, while there are LCD TV's playing indian music on the other end for people who are interested in tuning to it.
Next comes the food. I wouldn't say that it is inexpensive, definitely not a place for everyday lunches or dinners, but it is very reasonable. They have vegetarian and non-veg entrees, and other than a few curries and biryani which is a bit on the higher side, the average price ranges from 9 to 12 dollars, which I think is standard for a place like Westwood. The quality of food is excellent. It's not like they reheat food and serve it to you. You can actually feel the authentic north-indian flavor and spices in the curries. the breads are fluffy and tasty, and there is a wide variety to choose from, some unusal ones being Makki Paratha, Amritsari naan, Pudina paratha and the Ambala Kulcha. They also have seafood, lamb and goat for the meat-lovers and the Vegetable Biryani is highly recommended.
Among drinks and desserts, the Almond shake, Pistachio shake, Rasmalai and Malai Kulfi available in several flavors is a must-try! The service is a bit slower compared to some other restaurants I have been to, but the food is worth the wait. Overall, I'd give it 8 on 10 for the cute and homely setting and the tasty food that could make any occassion a special one! So the next time you are in Los Angeles, give Ambala Dhaba a try and come back to share what your experience has been.

The last time we went to Las Vegas, which was about 3 years ago, we could not find a single Indian restaurant anywhere near the strip!! Not that I need Indian food everyday, but after 3 lunches and dinners, I was craving for some "desi" food and the only thing I found were the frozen dinners in a faraway Indian grocery store:( So this time when we made the trip to Las Vegas again with our parents, it was a pleasant surprise to find not one, but three restaurants right on the strip!! And now I'm going to share with you my experience about the best place to enjoy Indian Food in Las Vegas - it's at Tamba Indian Cuisine, the "Soul Of India in the heart of Las Vegas", as their tag line says!! We went here for dinner on a Friday night, and since this is undoubtedly the most coveted restaurant by Indians and non-indians, make sure you take time to reserve a table in advance. The atmosphere as you enter the place is hip, stylish and vibrant, with the walls decorated with traditional Indian paintings and bring orange lamp shades creating a soothing hue over your tables along with the flickering candles. The star attraction though is the Tamba Lounge, a beautiful and relaxing place that features plus seating and dining surrounded by colorful and comfortable cusions, a striking Buddha painting on one wall and the same chic fiery color scheme on the rest of the walls. This sure is a place that will fill your senses with the "sights, sounds and aromas of India".
If you can get over the aura of the place and get seated, a courteous waiter would provide you with a binded menu that is fancy enough to go as wedding invitation. This holds a plethora of culinary delights ranging from soups, appetizers, tandoor entrees, curries (vegetarian and non-vegetarian), breads, side orders, desserts and drinks. We tried the Malai Koftas and Shahi Paneer with Naans and the Veg Biryani at the end. The food is not very spicy (though they could make it for you if you requested it), the curries were very tasty, the tandoori items were well-cooked and delicious, and the Biryani was definitely applaudable!! Very few indian restaurants have impressed me with their biryani, and Tamba is surely one of them. The chicken tikka masala is also a worthy choice.
They also have an extensive drink menu, and though my husband did not enjoy his Lychee Martini as it had no flavour in it, all the other drinks we ordered were upto the mark. The desserts were upto the standards too. And for all the extravagance, Tamba did not prove to be an over-priced restaurant at all. Everything was reasonable and we left the restaurant with our hunger and senses highly satiated! Visit Tamba Lounge for more information.
So the next time you are in Vegas, be sure to check out this place. They also cater for events and the lounge sure looked like a perfect place to have your meetings or events, aka "Las Vegas style!!" Do come back to share your experiences with the rest of the audience at Fun and Food.

I suddenly realized that it has been a long time since I posted a restaurant review. I've been so busy creating my own special recipes that I forgot about the great chefs working day in and day out to serve us quality food when we go to their restaurants!! So, here's a tribute to one of my special food joints; Spice Hut in Fremont, CA is the best self-serve Indian fast food restaurant that I've been to in the Bay Area. And with a large menu full of top picks from around the country, this is sure to win your hearts and souls (after all, great food touches your soul, right!!:)) Spice Hut is located on Cedar Blvd in Newark in a small place in one of the road-side complexes. The place is easy to miss, and we had to make a U-turn and come back to discover it. As the area is small, you have to stand in line as soon as you enter the door, to order for your food at the counter. They have ample seating, and you can join tables at the far end of the restaurant to accomodate large groups, and there's also the patio seating if you are in the mood. But even with all this, the place is always cramped; well, I told you, it has the best food at the right price!! Plus, it's not a lavish restaurant, so if you come here with that in mind, and if you are not wary of children creating havoc and having fun, you would enjoy Spice-Hut.
Now for the good part, the menu has a huge collection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian regional favourites, including "Indian-Chinese" food (yes, there's actually a food category by that name!!) I love their Paneer Chilly and Veg manchurian with Fried Rice!! amazingly simple and tastes so good!! Other dishes that deserve a mention are the Veggi Burgers, Mysore Masala Dosa, the Masala Fried Fish Combo and the biryanis. We went there once for a team outing and all my colleagues (mostly americans and chinese) loved the food there!! They also have combos so you can choose 2-3 items in a meal. This is ideal for first-time visitors who want to taste a little bit of everything. And don't forget to try out their chutneys and raitha which comes complimentary with your meals. I just love their tomato-onion chutney!!
They have branches in Sunnyvale, San Jose and Menlo Park too, but I like the Fremont one because it is the largest in area. The food is fresh and the staff is cordial. The price is also perfect for a quick lunch or an evening with friends. The restaurant is reasonably-clean for a self-serve one. You cannot expect the luxury of a dine-in restaurant, so don't come here with any pre-notions!! Overall, I would rate it a 4 out of 5. it loses the 5th star for the cramped place and the noisy environment. Not something for a quiet evening or a special date!! But the best in Indian food for your money's worth!
If you happen to be around Fremont or Newark, you have to try Spice Hut; and come back to share your experiences with us!!
